Lithino Workshop Part I

Cost does not include materials. Specialist lithographic drawing materials can be order online from Intaglio Printmaker or Lawrence Art (UK). They will last absolutely ages if you do not already own some. Materials list at the end of the description. Any questions, just message Mary.

Zoom meeting code alongside preliminary workshop notes will be emailed 1 week before the date of the live session.

Course Outline

Lithino Workshop 01 is the first of the two lithino workshops. Lithino 01 focusses on the drawing and creating of a series of printing matrices. Lithino 02 prints these, so it is highly recommended to complete both workshops to understand the full process. The workshops are split to enable essential stabilisation of the matrices created in 01.

Lithino is a technique developed by Mary in 2022. It describes lithography in lino and enable the artist to introduce very expressive and autographic marks on the surface of lino, which can then be integrated with a standard relief carving. The technique has a edition size similar to mokulito, around 10 (although Mary has successfully printed an edition of 20 no problem, but do not always assume this!). The focus on the zoom workshop will be unique prints, to celebrate the artform for its individual expression.

We will be using traditional lithographic drawing medium to create marks and images on the surface of prepared lino. Mary will show how the lithographic mediums are used to generate specific results, such as reticulation. After series of printing matrices have been generated, they will be 'etched' and left to stabilise ahead of workshop 02 where you will print them.

Please note these live zoom sessions are not recorded.  Refunds after booking are not available.

Materials for BOTH WORKSHOP 01 AND 02

Printing roller/brayer

Traditional oil based ink in black. NOT the water washable oil based inks or modified oil based inks. Traditional inks made with linseed oil and pigment. I recommend Intaglio Printmaker Litho/Relief inks

Traditional jute backed lino in sizes you wish to work. Make sure your paper is bigger than the lino. We will need 3-4 pieces of lino of your chosen size/s.

medium grade wire wool

A mixture of paper samples to test handprinting. Not beyond 120gms as it becomes hard to print by hand. Japanese washi, for instance Tosa Washi is perfect. You can also just use photocopy paper to get the process going.

Wooden spoon for handprinting

Lithographic crayon, ideally a selection of hard and soft.

Liquid Lithographic Drawing Ink/Autographic Ink

Stick Tusche (if you already have liquid tusche, all good)

Lithographic Rubbing Ink/tablet

Gum arabic in solution

2 lithographic sponges or nice large sponges

small container or bowl to hold water and sponge. It will get inky.

access to water

lino carving tools

selection of paintbrushes and dip pens and other drawing tools (sticks, feathers etc)

Zoom meeting code alongside preliminary workshop notes will be emailed 1 week before the date of the live session.

Course Outline

Learn how to utilise hand printing and hand stamping methods at home, without the need for a press, to generate professional and dynamic prints. The workshop is focussing on purely unique prints, so be prepared to be experimental and explorative.

We will work predominately in monochrome due to the time schedule, but colour will be explored briefly.

This workshop will be fun and enable you to take a looser approach to developing prints. Treat it as a printmaking crash course to unblock any blocked printing rivers.

The course will follow a series of smaller demonstrations and projects that will give you a fuller understanding of where these techniques can go. Mary will also continually catch up individually with students to make sure ideas and motivation are flowing!

Please note these live zoom sessions are not recorded.  Refunds after booking are not available.

Selection of textured relief items such as textured wallpaper samples, corks, fabrics.

Saturday 18th May 2024

9:00 - 16:00 GMT

1 hour lunch break, 2 x 15 minute tea breaks.

Cost does not include materials. Materials list at the end of the description.

Zoom meeting code alongside preliminary workshop notes will be emailed 1 week before the date of the live session.

Course Outline

This innovative way to produce an impression can be done at home without the need of a printing press. It creates sculptural reliefs that can be further worked into as 3D items. It is a wonderful technique for those wishing to explore beyond paper.

We will be looking at making intaglio, monoprint and relief matrices and once inked up, we will cast them as simple plaster tiles. We will look at which marks work well, how to incorporate different depths and how to make your own moulds.

A truly innovative workshop for those who live on the printing edge.

Please note: This workshop requires the mixing and casting of plaster. Please make sure you have facilities to do this safely and wear gloves and a dust mask when handling the plaster.

Please note these live zoom sessions are not recorded.  Refunds after booking are not available.

Materials

1 x silicone cake mould 20cm x 20cm (approximately) or several disposable aluminium ones.

Some lino to carve (equating to A4)

Pieces of Tetra Pak or paper dry point card (equating to A3. So 3 x flat packed orange juice cartons).

Printing roller/brayer

Mixing bucket for plaster

Measuring vessel for plaster (old cup)

Mixing wooden spoon or whisk for plaster
